I did a post not too long ago that shows you how to create a cd/dvd to boot
your Linux off. It starts with the two drive option, but includes the full
instructions for the bootable cd/dvd. But to do that you will need a
starting point for the single drive version unless you are already able to
write your own ./grub/menu.lst file. That isn't too hard and the post sends
you to a web page where you can see examples.
The thread is called 'Replacing hard drive' so if you search google groups
with,

you will find it.
