Hello:
booting from a USB storage device is a BIOS option... on many (not so)
recent motherboards. The ASUS A7N8X mother board that I am using for about
2 years support this... but I have never tried it!
If I had a USB storage device, I would... but I don't.
Please post on this, because USB storage devices become "main stream" and
installing Linux this way, should be just as easy as "the other ways":
CD/DVD/NETWORK...

I yet have to hear from IDE DVD devices that don't work. (Oh and it is
SUSE, not SuSE anymore). If in doubt that it will function, see if they
have a return policy.
I haven't tried installing to USB yet, but my A8V Deluxe certainly boots
from USB, in fact, if there is a USB storage device connected at boot, it
re-writes the BIOS of the machine, deletes all internal HD's and CD/DVD
devices and will only boot from the USB device! To boot normally after
that, I had to switch of the USB device and then go into the BIOS and
re-detect the hard drives and DVD writers!
The same is true of the A8N board.
There is a BIOS update to solve this problem, but it is a PITA when you
first see it, you think the HD's are dead or have become corrupted - a
friend rebuilt his Windows installation twice from images before he
realised he'd left his iPod connected when he re-booted :-O
