SUSE 10, intermittent sound

Hi
I've just installed SUSE 10 on a new machine with an ASROCK 939NF4
motherboard which has onboard sound, but I got no sound out of that and
the device didn't show up in YAST, so I put in a Soundblaster Live 24
bit SB0410.
I've got system sounds, and it'll play an MP3 file, but I'm getting
intermittent sound from the DVD/CD drive.
By intermittent, I mean it's like a faulty microphone would be .. real
time music, but it drops out (is silent) for maybe half the time in a
1/2second cycle.
I've changed the drive, used a different CD, there are two media
players on here (Banshee and Rythmbox and it's the same on both and the
same whether I use Helix or GStreamer, and it sounds the same on
headphones out of the rear green (I think) socket. I had the analogue
cable from drive to motherboard installed, plugged it into the
soundcard, removed it, no difference.
Maybe it's a data buffering thing, but a) I don't know where those
settings are, and b) if it's having problems with CD, what's going to
happen when I want it to handle DVD playback.
I've worked through this with the local and another LUG and not fixed
it so I've escalated it here.
Any clues?
I'm a professional web developer with a degree in Internet Computing,
but I'm only 1/4 through the LPI course .. just so you know my level.
Cheers
J
