Ok, I'll admit that was trolling to some extent. I will stop insulting
the alt newsgroups. They do provide me with lots of interesting
pictures! :-)
I won't even go there. ;)

As houghi put it, not an attack; an explanation; useful information. Trust
me here. We would all much rather have you look at this group as friendly
people trying to help each other out. We would much prefer that you stick
around, read more posts, and if you see someone with a problem, to which
you have an answer, join us in adding your knowledge to that of the group,
as a whole, by offering that answer. We will all benefit by your
contribution.
No two of us got here by the same path. We all have something unique to
offer. We only learn what that may be by offering what we can, when we
can. We may eat trolls for lunch, (gnomes and elves are served at brunch
and tea time, respectively) but good guys, that want to help, are always
welcome. ;-D
I don't have a UNIX box with rn on it, or a VAX with nn (which both
automatically bottom post, I have learned), so I use the tools provided
to me.
It's all any of us can do, but we control the tool, we don't let the tool
control us. ;-)
Anyway, to answer my own question and get back on topic, there is a 2 GB
file limit in the ncpfs tools and the author claims there is no way to
fix it, since this limit exists in the ncp protocol and was fixed with
Netware 6.5 Support Pack 3.
Lost me. "No way to fix it", and "was fixed with Netware 6.5 Support Pack
3", does not compute. Is the second use of the word "fix" used in the
sense "to set", as opposed to "to repair" as is the first use?
The actual Novell client for Suse Linux does not have a 2 GB file limit
when you map a drive letter to a mountpoint,
Again, does not compute. Mapping a drive letter to a mountpoint is a
Windows thing. How does this tie in with SUSE Linux? Maybe I'm being
overly dense, but I'm not following the train of thought, or the train's
being derailed, halfway to the station.
and I have used that as a reasonable workaround for now, until we can
get FTP or some other protocol installed on our Netware server.
Does this mean that your original problem is solved, for the moment? Are
you still trying for a bash solution? I'm confused. ;-)
To recap, you have a number of files, greater than 2GB residing on a
Netware server, and you want to transfer/copy them to a USB external hard
drive, using SUSE Linux, as the transfer agent. Using the GUI, they
transfer properly, but from the CLI, they truncate at 2GB.
1. Exactly, what are the mount points used, how are they established, and
what is the exact command you are issuing, at the CLI, that causes this
problem.
2. Is there a possibility to split the over 2GB files into less than 2GB
chunks, transfer them, and then reassemble them in their new location,
like Usenet binaries, using either tar, or rar? That should be scriptable.
