Sorry about the delay, I had to go to work.

Summary:
Load "v4l"
Load "dri"

Happy so far.

# Allow RTC (Real time clock) access
add /dev/rtc desktop

Still happy.

Configured Kaffeine to use XV output, click Apply, -> immediate death
freeze, requiring a kill proc sequence to clean up. Sometimes KDE would
prompt after 30 secs, reporting "prog not responding, kill yes/no?",
sometimes not.

Had to hand-edit the config file
~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config
to get rid of the reference to xv before kaffeine would fire up cleanly. So
far only opengl seems to work with all the video file types I have on disk.

Happy again.
