My system language is English but that shouldn't make a difference. I only
ever configured the keyboard via Yast - i.e. didn't mess with any
configuration files.

Maybe this helps...

I can check it tomorrow with my settings, but as far as I remember it looks
pretty the same except that my system language is German. If I use the
system console (not under X) it works fine. But the console uses a
different keyboard map than the console under X.

Can you check if you have a line looking like this "KEY <LSGT>
{[less,greater,bar]};" in your /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/de ?
