I would like to setup a NTP SERVER (not just client) on a laptop with SUSE
10.0.
The idea is to sync all machines from a stand-alone network with this
laptop. The exact time is not very important, just that they would all be
the same.
But by putting it on the laptop, it can get the time from a real NTP when
it's connected to the Net.
Anyone usefull hints for a quick and simple setup ?
1. Install, start and setup the package xntp on your laptop and your Linux
clients. (I suppose it to be present in 10.0, otherwise get the rpm package
from elsewhere and install it with yast.)
2. Modify the server line in /etc/ntp.conf on your laptop like:
server IPADRESSOFANINTERNETTIMESERVERFROMYOURREGION
3. Modify the server line in /etc/ntp.conf on your clients like
server IPADRESSOFYOURLAPTOP
3. Set the xntpd in your runlevel editor to Yes on all, server and clients.
XP-Clients:
1. rightclick on the time in the taskbar
2. choose change date/time (I don't know, if it is named like this in
English)
3. click on internet time,
choose automatically and
give to server the IPADRESSOFYOURLAPTOP
That's it!
From now on your laptop will get the time from an internet timeserver andyour clients will get it from your laptop.
