/var/log/messages is syslog. The way you use it depends on what you
want. You can have a look at it with any browser. What I do is I
installed a program called ccze.
Next I do¹ is `tail -f /var/log/messages|ccze`² and get a nice look
live at what is happening. http://bonehunter.rulez.org/software/ccze/
¹ A nice thing to do and to make it all worthwile. Make a terminal
tranparent, with no borders and see that it does not overlap your icons
if you have them. Also see that it sticks in the back and does not grab
the attention of the keyboard. The mouse is OK, because then you can
still copy/paste errormessages. I use wterm for this.
¹ Read `man tail` on what you can do. You can add each and every
textfile you want, however logfiles change more. If you have a
webserver, look at the errors, not the access logs. The same perhaps for
messages. CCZE only gives some colour to it. That makes it much eaiser
to read and detect problems.
It also sees to it that it looks nicer and will _really_ be a wow factor
once I get a girl here in the basement of my parents.
