I have been using Open SuSE 10.0 as my personal computer for about
three months now, and it's been great. With the release of 10.1, I
decided to try it out. I'm having one major problem that I haven't
been able to get around:
When I run Online Update in YaST, I get several packages that need
updates. Some are security, and some are simply recommended. They are
all checked as 'Keep' in the left pane, and some of them have
associated packages checked, and some have unchecked packages in the
right pane. Either way, I hit accept (Because I want the packages to
be updated...like I have been doing in 10.0), and the update
application just closes.
I have to wonder if this is related to an issue with the automatic
update circle which resides down in the right hand corner by the clock.
When it informs me of updates and I tell it to Update, I get a variety
of messages, including "Transaction failed: Package transaction
failed:"
Is there a problem with the package repository? SuSE set it up itself
on install. And shouldn't it detect it and give some kind
of...intelligent information about it?
Any help will be greatly appriciated, other than my update problem, I'm
loving 10.1.
My brief response is that Yast does not seem to be the same old Yast as
before. It 'seems' that there is a bit of cleaning up to do yet. I, for
one do not have a tray icon for online updates. I think Houghi said he
does but uses Gnome, whereas i use KDE. So I added Gnome and logged into
Gnome. Still I do not have the panel icon. I haven't figured out how to
add it either. Also, yes your right about the updates having check in
the
boxes rather than the old Yast, which showed the arrow-circle to show
the
package would be updated. Me thinks this is a mistake. You can,
however,
right click on the box and select 'update'. I also can not get the
automatic update setup dialog to run in Yast. I don't get a selection of
which site to use for updates, just a blank page with no options except
o.k. or not. Lots of bugs in my opinion. Others have suggested that
10.1
was released prematurely. I agree. So far I've only seen about 8
patches
and none for Yast itself. I hope the are reading these posts !!!
On another issue I think that too many packages have to many shared
dependencies! Trying to remove one package is becoming very difficult
without all sorts of dependency issues. I don't want syncing programs as
I
don't have a PDA or IPOD, etc. Yet, trying to remove these results in a
problem with KDE PIM package. I am now starting to consider other
desktop
manager as these problems don't occur. I've spent some time using
Blackbox
recently as well as FVWM. Maybe I install Enlightenment as I have used
that quite a bit. Better yet, maybe SuSE will just fix these problems.
I have grown fond of KDE over the years. I think I'm just a bit
frustrated
with 10.1. 10.0 was, seemingly, much more production ready.
I can't even turn off power saving. I 'hate' having the screen go blank
after a few minutes when I've turned off all screesavers and power saving
in the monitor configuration.
Anyway, that's todays RANT !!!
I love SuSE nonetheless. And KDE too. Perhaps in a few days all this
crap will get remedied.....????
Maybe Linux Journal has room for two people to have a RANT column ???
LOL :-)

That starts the update (Xen/Zen?) which should sit in your system tray
(looks like a globe).
Guy
Thanks for the link. I'm reading your blog now. However, what I stated
before is that the module you referred to is not working (Online Update
Configuration). It does nothing.....Same thing with Online Update Setup.
Maybe I will reinstall these Yast Packages...
I now have the....the......Oh My God....Yes....There it goes !!
Refreshing services !! That seems to be it. I'll get back to you later.
Me thinks this is going to work...
Thanks buddy..I'll take a chill pill and get things working correctly.
THE GLOBE Ahhh !! Not the green lizard icon. I get it.
:-)
