Next Steps? Alternatives?

I own 10.0 and was looking forward to curing some problems (e.g. mal-use of USB devices) with this or the following distribution. From what I have read, 10.1 is actually less useful than 10 in some respects. So, I have two questions:
1. Is there any indication that the deficiencies will be made up soon by downloadable fixes within the next few weeks?
2. I suspect it would be advisable to shop around for alternatives to SuSE. Any advice along that line? I looked at Ubuntu because of a recent review I read, but was a bit put off by all the sweetness and hugging going on there.
