I own 10.0 and was looking forward to curing some problems (e.g. mal-use
of USB devices) with this or the following distribution. From what I
have read, 10.1 is actually less useful than 10 in some respects. So, I
have two questions:
Is the "mal-use" a reference to the use of "sync"? What exactly is
the "mal-use" you mention??
Obviously SUSE's use of sync on USB is NOT "mal-use"... and getting
around that has been documented many times (forcing the user to
a manual umount before removal).
1. Is there any indication that the deficiencies will be made up soon
by downloadable fixes within the next few weeks?
I would think the Zenworks problems will be worked out over time...
but I could see it taking 10.2 before they are all addressed (just
my opinion).
If 10.0 works for you (I'm still wondering about... "mal-use")... then
there's no need to upgrade.
2. I suspect it would be advisable to shop around for alternatives to
SuSE. Any advice along that line? I looked at Ubuntu because of a
recent review I read, but was a bit put off by all the sweetness and
hugging going on there.
Ubuntu was certainly the distribution of the year in 2006. I do
encourage you to give it a try (and any other Linux distribution).
You need to find the "fit" that works best for you. Personally,
I find the other dists to be primitive and unthoughtful, but I
have to support a wide variety of configs and platforms (most don't).
Best thing to do is to find out for yourself... if you don't
choose SUSE, there's nothing wrong with that...
