When I make manual changes to the /etc/passwd file, does this become
effective immediatly or do I need to restart a service. If so which one?
Changes to /etc/passwd are effective immediately after you write your
changes (save the file). There is no service to restart.
This also means that if you screw up, you might be in a pickle. Why not
use YaST, Security and Users, * Management.
