More 10.1 (Mis)Adventures

Another very frustrating 10.1 install, this one an ASUS F7400 laptop (a very
nice piece of kit, BTW). For this install I knew to avoid the buggy Knetwork
Manager, and disabled it during network setup. Ethernet and modem (each on a
PCMCIA card) had no problems, with Knetwork Manager sidelined.

(Earlier Knetwork Manager dustup: <slrne7tiio.5m1.wyrd@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>)

I selected FTP install from 10.1 DVD for the laptop--previous (desktop) used
the 10.1 set of 6 CDs through onboard CD drive.

Some delay at first with the laptop LAN connection, unrelated to SuSE, for a
typically routine network FTP install after they were ironed out.

I thought maybe 10.1 would be OK for me afterall, but I was mistaken.

Fired up YaST Software Management post-install for customization. Imagine my
surprise when YaST couldn't connect to the very same FTP server it had quite
recently used for initial 10.1 install. I aborted Software Management and on
to Installation Source to fix whatever heartburn YaST was having.

No go. YaST was adamant about that very same server now a persona non grata.

Fsck that. Delete fscking server registration and reload it. Still no go.

Now I'm really getting exasperated.

After 30 minutes or so trying everything under the sun, I wander over to one
of the 10.0 FTP installs to see what YaST expected there.

Seems the 10.1 Sekret Sauce is to register the DVD device as

%2fmedia/dvd

rather than simply

media/dvd

from the YaST default prompt. Oh sure, that's bloody phrickin' obvious.

OK, back to the trenches. YaST does now seem to follow the FTP link to find
the DVD device, but has a snit with the media available:

...blahblah... %2fmedia/dvd does not contain the desired media.

BS. Flip to a console and manually ftp the 10.1 README file so I *KNOW* the
correct media is there, whatever YaST is whining about.

OK, suit yourself, YaST, but I am so outta here...
