SUSE 10.1: installation and login problem (password)

Hi!
I'm a new Linux user and I'm experiencing some difficulties. I have
SUSE Linux 10.1 running but there were some problems during
installation. Some packages werent found on the CD (the CD was fine,
btw.) and I chose to ignore that. I guess that skipped the user
configuration since the OS became operational and I soon found out I
need the root password in order to use it. This is my big problem: no
root password. The installation didn't ask me abou it, but the OS wants
it. I was able to create another user using Failsafe startup, but when
I try to install programs in Suse, the OS asks me to enter root
password.
Is there any way to retrieve/reset it? If I wasn't asked for a password
the system must have made up a (default) password - I guess. Does
anyone know how to solve my problem? I don't want to go through 4 hours
of installation (slower PC... :S ) again...
Thanks!!!
.
