Vera Sans font installed, and somehow, on my Suse 10.0 system, I'm
having difficulties installing them. I tried copying the font
files in the font folder in konqueror, but that doesn't seem to
have any effect...? Did anyone have success with the fonts?

a folder. Open KDE control center, click on system administration -
font installer, click the administrator mode button, click add
fonts, Then browse to the folder you extracted the font you
downloaded, add the font.
However, Google Earth still complains that I don't, and displays
everything in a tiny, almost unreadable font.

Just a thought, I have done the font optimization from the following
link;
http://en.opensuse.org/Optimal_Use_of_Fonts_on_SuSE
Maybe that would help?
