OK, I did it, I finally installed Linux in one of my (former) windows
boxes, and so far I'm impressed. I downloaded the CD set from OpenSuse,
tried the DVD but I couldn't boot from it, and installed it. Even added
a few packages using Yast (Thunderbird, Acrobat reader, Flash player
for example, but I cannot figure out how to play MP3's ! I cann't
figure out how to add Soundforge as a install site !. Help

By the way, I've been folowing this group for at least a year now, and
I couldn't have gotten this far without all your help.

Thanks in advance

John

1. Use Amarok for mp3's.

I'm in Amarok now. It says that some media cannot be loaded (the mp3's
that I want to play. Right now they are on my windows side on a fat32
partition. Does that make any difference ?

Yes. You probably don't have permissions set up right. As I'm not an
expert on that I'd say you're best off if you can move them to your Linux
partition.

2. What do you mean by "I cann't figure out how to add Soundforge as a
install site " ??

When I try to add sourceforge as a installation source it doesn't let me
do it (of course I haven't a clue how to enter the settings in YAsT.

Well, first it seems that your original posting said 'soundforge' which is
a
windows application !! Now you are saying 'sourceforge' which is what I
thought you might have meant. Sorry but that is not an rpm repository
with
which you can point Yast to. That will not work. It does contain both
source files as well as rpm packages. However, it is not laid out in a
way
that you can use it as an installation source. If you go to this link you
will see what the available Yast repositories are:

http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories

But, as the structure of these repositories is under heavy development
some
may not work, are not for the most recent version (10.1) etc. You'll know
when you try to add them to Yast installation sources. I'd suggest at the
very least to add packman & guru.

Also, here's a start page for the new build service, which is the future
for SuSE:

http://software.opensuse.org/download/

If you browse through the folders on this page you'll start to get an idea
what is/ will be available. Good luck. :-)

The post above (Andre Lauw) may be correct regarding you needing the
package 'mad'. As I already have this installed I probably didn't notice I
needed that for mp3's in Amarok. I got that from the packman repo.
