Yes, Klaus Knopper, I believe, has brought a lot to material recognition. But now I have problems, even with Knoppix. It seems KDE has removed the keyboard I use and I can't find it in any new LiveCD... except STUX. GutenPrint, the revolutionary new software for printing refuses to load the driver for my printer. And my new monitor, a Viewsonic VX922, is not set right by Knoppix. I have to use the data provided by PCLinuxOS for an LG L1952TX. PCLinuxOS doesn't otherwise set the Viewsonic VX922 correctly either.
No printer, no keyboard, and lots of problems to set my monitor right. I feel I'm going back to the bad old days. The monitor is fairly new on the market, but both my keyboard and printer are far from new.
We cope with those problems because we want to use Linux, but Windows users don't appreciate that kind of trip. Sometimes I wished that the guys who set the keyboard right, those who set the printer right, those who set a comparable monitor right would get together so I could use ONE LiveCD without too much pain.

When you understand the general "image-processing concepts", maybe you'll find the intergace really odd. It's not by chance that hardly any professional graphic artist uses it and beginners get discouraged so easily.
As to GimpShop, it might present a more workable interface, but if the option to draw an resize a selection to a given aspect ratio lacks in the Gimp, you certainly won't find it in GimpShop either.

No. More advanced users don't find anything good in the Gimp interface either. It's just awkward for anybody but the adept of arcane interfaces.
BTW, Distrowatch has a bad news today. It seems things are not running very smootly at Gentoo's:
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20060626#news
Daniel Robbins took lots of care setting up Gentoo because he had had rough experiences before. Still, he was the first to leave and now others are following. In large so-called "democratic" groups, a struggle for power always arise. I believe it would be better if groups didn't have more than 12 members concentrating on a task and keeping in touch with other groups that achieve the goal they were set for.
