Hi there,
I'm getting confuddled trying to setup a route through my SuSE 10.1
box to allow a Kubuntu box internet access thru the ADSL router that
is connected to the SuSE box...here is what I have...
Box A: SuSE 10.1 32-bit
- eth0 is a 10/100 SiS900 adapter connected to the router with IP
set using DHCP...
- eth1 is a gigabit ASUSTek Marvell 88E8001 connected to Box B with
IP address 192.168.0.1...
Box B: Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake 32-bit
- eth0 is another 10/100 SiS900, with inet addr showing '192.168.0.250'
I'm dumbfounded that in this day and age networking cannot be a simple
plug and play setup, with simple configuration. Instead I'm asked for a
pile of confusing gateway and route numbers. Enough ranting from me.
What do I need to do with SuSE to have eth1 route through to eth0 to
share its internet? What also do I need to do on the Kubuntu box to
allow it to connect?
It's been a while since I did this but I'll give it a shot.
On box 'A' you need to allow packet forwarding.
Yast -> Network Card -> (x)Traditional Method with ifup -> Next -> Edit ->
(Address Tab -> Routing -> Check (X) Enable IP Forwarding -> OK.
On box B:
Since it's not SuSE just edit using whatever tool you've got with Kubuntu,
the Network card. Do NOT enable IP Forwarding but DO give the address you
provided above (192.168.0.1) as the 'Default Gateway'.
That's it. You may need to reboot both machines as this is about the only
time Linux needs to do this. Actually this will be necessary. When you
reboot the system (kernel) will read the new routing table informatin and
allow packet forwarding on machine A (gateway box) and machine B will need
to connect through this box using the address you provided for the Gateway
Address(192.168.0.1)
Finally got it going. Turns out Kubuntu has a bug whereby default
gateway is set at 0.0.0.0 at boot if using dhcp, changing to static
ip 192.168.0.250 with gateway 192.168.90.1 solved that...
Now to figure out setting up network folders... :-)
