Rescuing data from DVD

I did a clean update to 10.1 on one of my machines the other day. For
various reasons, I wanted to create a new /home directory as well as
the root one, so basically was formatting the entire drive.
I did want to preserve a few directories from the old /home though -
specifically the .cxoffice one, through which Quicken is run on that
machine. Therefore I copied those to a DVD before proceeding.
When preparing to burn the DVD, k3b gave a warning that some of the
Joliet extensions would have to be shortened, but this would not be a
problem unless the disc was to be read on a Windows system. As I don't
use Windows, I did not think this would be of any concern.
The burn seemed to go OK and on finishing, I briefly checked the disc.
All the directories seemed to be there, so I proceeded to format the
drive and re-install the OS.
Alas, on trying to run the backup, I ran into a seemingly
unsurmountable obstacle. The DVD gives out an I/O error. The
directories are all there, however all the data on closer inspection
seems to be read as plain text format. They seem to be the correct size
in kb, but of course cannot be read, as the various formats (.zip,
..exe, .doc, .qdb and so on) are not properly recognized, even when
attempting to be accessed through the programs they are related to
(Word, Quicken, etc).
Is there anything at all I can do to rescue these? I'd be very grateful
for any suggestions...
Thanks.
John B.
