Alas, on trying to run the backup, I ran into a seemingly
unsurmountable obstacle. The DVD gives out an I/O error. The
directories are all there, however all the data on closer inspection
seems to be read as plain text format.
What do you mean by that? All files are 'plain text' and most
configuration files can even be read by humans.
Sorry, I have obviously not described the problem clearly enough.
In this case, say I have a file called 123.jpg. When I look at its
properties, it will tell me that it is 36 kb in size, of a type "plain
text document". This is clearly not correct, as while the size is
recognized correctly, the file itself is a jpeg picture.
If I try to open it in the Gimp, it will give an error. If I try to
open it using Konqueror file manager, it will give a warning to the
effect that the file has a jpg extension, but it presents as a plain
text document, which may mean opening it is a security risk. If I
choose "open anyway", it'll give an error.
The same problem applies to all other files.
They seem to be the correct size
in kb, but of course cannot be read, as the various formats (.zip,
.exe, .doc, .qdb and so on) are not properly recognized, even when
attempting to be accessed through the programs they are related to
(Word, Quicken, etc).
Those are Windows programs. No idea how to solve that.
The problem is not related to whether they are Windows programs or not.
(And yes, unfortunately I do have to run Word and Quicken under
Crossover, to be able to supply the related formats to my accountant).
As stated above, the same problem occurs with _all_ file types.

John B.
