512 is a bit on the low side, yet it should be enough. Run the usual
applications that are in there since at least 6.1 to check what is using
you system (top, free, ps aux, ...)

Houghi, how *can* that be on the low side?!?

To find that out, answer the rest of the question. Run the usual
applications that are in there since at least 6.1 to check what is using
you system (top, free, ps aux, ...)

My main system has 1GB (1034544) and it is starting to get crowded. OTOH
I have an other system with 12MB (13232) and that is more then enough.

The fact that I only run ssh on one machine and a Paralles (a virtual
manager) on the other might be an explanation. ;-)
