Could be a kernel version issue. As for "heresy" -- most certainly not.
The differences between Linux distros are typically less than those
between the different proprietary UNIXes that Linux is busy supplanting.
We're all in this together.

SuSE hangs on boot at "Scanning PCI bus (00)" - no combination of boot
parameters will get past this...

I had a hunt through my kernel sources, /etc/init.d scripts, /sbin and
/usr/sbin -- still haven't found where this message is coming from. Did
you try "acpi=off"?
