Looking at other posts NX looks really interesting. Compression is really
quite significant.
A long time ago I was able to run the old UNIX programs over dialup
quite well. I may have used an X compressor, or maybe not. Things are
a lot more graphical now. X is quite efficient at rectangles and text,
but anything conveying pictures is slow. I also note that things like
Open Office seem reluctant to store the images on the X server so when a
toolbar button has to be redrawn the image is sent over the wire again.
So it seems anyway, as toolbar redraws are really slow. X Server
resources aren't so limited now.
