On this box you need root access to run ifconfig at all. I assume, then,
that not true for all distros?

It lives in /sbin, which is often not included in the path for a plain
as in Jane user, but executing /sbin/ifconfig will allow you to see the
current network interfaces and their status, IP's etc.

Attempting to use ifconfig to change routing etc *will* require you to
be root...
