Hi
Have you tried the 'Adblock' extension?
http://adblock.mozdev.org/

Better than this is a plugin called FlashBlock which does exactly what a
previous poster mentioned. Every flash animation in the page is replaced
by a space with a play button in the middle of it which you have to
click on to play the movie.

This has the wonderful side effect that little invisible flash
animations who's only purpose is to do popups or other nasties never get
to run and web surfing is a much calmer experience.

On this note of extentions, I use adblock and also stylish
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2108/. The last one edits specific
css pages. e.g. tomshardware: http://userstyles.org/style/show/490
