useradd and Yast can't create a user

I am dealing with a Mime type problem (details too embarrassing to list here). I tried to create a new user with both Yast2 & command line useradd program.
This appeared to work with useradd (no error messages, the /home/<username> directory was created) but the user created this way could not log on. A look at \etc\shadow revealed that the passwords created by useradd were in clear, the passwords created in the original system setup had the usual garble-text indicating a hash. Is this a "feature" or is there a parameter somewhere that is incorrect?
Also when attempting to create users with Yast2 it rejects input for the username with the message 'The username may contain only letters, digits, "-" (etc, etc)' when the username is valid. Using the "Suggestion" button also creates an unacceptable username. I am puzzled...
