I have found that I prefer the Debian approach to package management
because it seems to deal better with software dependencies and
installation. I use the synaptic GUI package management tool on (K)Ubuntu
and find it quite pleasant to work with - DISCLAIMER - I've not really
used SUSE much for quite some time - there may be a port of kpackage for
it - I've found that useful on my Gentoo system.
