USB modem drivers might be a possible problem unfortunately. Typically
devices aimed at a cost cutting mass market such as internal (winmodems)
modems and some usb adsl modems are specifically arranged for windows.
They might not yet have got a linux driver written for them. It is worth
a try, and some help might be available here or web searches, but linux
background is substantially LAN (ethernet) connected and this is very easy.
A significant drawback with usb modems is the lack of any firewall
facility. ADSL modem/Routers are a little more expensive however they
have a basic firewall function too. So when you get connected it is
something to be aware of.
