From my perspective I did attempt to move from Windows to Linux, first in

I've been following linux (SUSE in particular) since about version 6 or
7.something. I also only fully switched over when v10 came out and have
never looked back. I still have XP on another disk and I think it has
been booted once since I installed SUSE!
If you want an easy, no effort operating system then pay $$$ for Windows. If
you are willing to invest a bit of your time to get an operating system
which can do what you want, then go for Linux. I should say that once you
have invested the time into getting Linux up and running then there is very
little you need to do to maintain on a day-to-day basis.
I agree there is very little day-to-day maintenance but I don't really
agree with the rest.
Last week I had a female friend visit me from the States who is a bit of
a luddite and only uses Windoze XP because that is what came
pre-installed on her Dell laptop. I don't believe she has ever used any
other OS. When she was here she was using my computer with SUSE 10.1
(x64) to check her webmail (Opera and/or Firefox) and she openly stated
without even being asking that she preferred my computer! When asked
why, she said it "looks nicer" and she particularly liked the
single-click way of launching applications from the desktop. She'd only
vaguely heard of linux before and when I told her it was free she then
asked "so why do people pay for Windoze?". Indeed!
Hopefully a sign that Linux is almost ready for the general public.
