If you've uninstalled the proprietary fglrx driver then you can add the
default back .

Login as a Superuser or root and
from the commandline:
root@linux: /> Init 3

run sax2 from the commandline
root@linux: /> /usr/sbin/sax2

to get back a basic config and install the default ati fglrx driver


thanks for the help, I did as you said and got the default setup back,
I'll leave it as it is now.
