I was at LinuxWorld in San Francisco yesterday and saw SLED. Wow! They
told
me I could convert free Suse 10.1 into SLED via a few updates/downloads,
etc.
I run Debian but I'm now interested in Suse 10.1. I understand it is NOT
a complete multi-media desktop (like Ubuntu, etc.)... that user has to
install acroread 7.0, Flash, as well as a bunch of other things for full
sound and video experience.
Somewhere I saw a site last week with an article on "How to complete
your
Suse 10.1 install" for something like that. It outlined the steps to
take
to add repos to Yast, what to install, etc. I can't find it now!
Maybe it would be a good idea for some kind soul to write a "Suse 10.1
newcomers FAQ" on how to to 'finish' Suse 10.1 and post it EVERY DAY (in
upper case!)?
What a brilliant idea!!
But definitely NOT in uppercase please. Have you ever tried reading any
lengthy article in uppercase? It is bloody difficult.
And of course links would be very welcome. But keep it very simple and
resort to jargon only when you have no other option -- for the sake of us
beginners. I am afraid I installed Suse Linux 10.1 but chickened out when
I could not establish Internet connection. My ISP said though Suse Linux
was supported they could not provide help with setting up the connection.
However, I'll give it another go one of these days.
(continued)All it would need would be basic instructions on what to do,
and/links to the more popular Suse help sites (I don't know of any at
this point but I assume you folks have as many as we have in the Debian
world?) I'm sure you folks get a lot of newcomers each day since Suse is
really starting to get some traction (they had a huge and crowded booth
at LW.)
I'm going to DL and burn the CDs this weekend. If anyone has install
tips
or
pointers for the new-to-Suse user, they would be appreciated. (We really
need 5 CDs?)
Al
Al,
The openSUSE http://en.opensuse.org has a lot of articles (and needs
more).
Look houghi's post, giving links to few pages that are collections of
references to other pages. How to squeeze that in one article.
BTW, this thread was really rich in this respect. It looks like "All what
you wanted to know about openSUSE.
Thanks.
