My sig has a link to my notes, see if there's anything I've done
in a different way.
well, you resorted to manually controlling the sequence by which
patches were loaded right from the start. This obviously required
prior knowledge or research, because nothing "out of the box" would
prompt you to do hat.
On top of which, now I have successfully got it all going, at the 3rd
install, it becomes clear that the user frustration with zen-updater
and rug may be based on it's poor handling of large workloads. In the
end I used rug update from the command line to get everything that
yast online update ignored, and there were a couple of one hour delays
between issuing a command and getting a prompt back. It all seems to
have been choking on the initial high workload, and once you clear all
that it all probably works OK.
That said, some of the problems appear not to have been with the code
or the local machine, but the data structures on the mirrors it was
trying to work with - there seems to have been a history of circular
references and impossible combinations, the very thing that a package
manager is supposed to prevent. I think that my last install has
allowed me to laep-frog various mantraps and pitfalls I fell into in
earlier update cycles.
I also think that there needs to be more information about how all this
works - where the data is, how you can purge or rebuild the database,
etc. I have tried the man pages and other sorts of info, and it isn't
enough. I'm quite happy to get the bonnet up and work on something -
as long as I know what is supposed to be under there.
Yast has always had the ability to load an update cd over the current
installation, but it is very rare, or indeed unheard of, for such a
thing to exist. It might have been a good idea givne all the noise and
mistrust about the launch of 10.1 to make a 10.1.patch iso available
somewhere to bypass all this package-by-package stuff. And what about
people on dial-up, what are they supposed to do?
