Re: Update is broken again !!!

I also think that there needs to be more information about how all this
works - where the data is, how you can purge or rebuild the database,
etc. I have tried the man pages and other sorts of info, and it isn't
enough. I'm quite happy to get the bonnet up and work on something -
as long as I know what is supposed to be under there.

openSUSE.org give a lot of information for you to browser through and
look at. Several have been posted by me (and others) already.

Yast has always had the ability to load an update cd over the current
installation, but it is very rare, or indeed unheard of, for such a
thing to exist.

Upgrades from a previous to a current vanilla installation are tested.
The problems arise when you do some things that are not default and let
us be honest, everybody does that.

It might have been a good idea givne all the noise and
mistrust about the launch of 10.1 to make a 10.1.patch iso available
somewhere to bypass all this package-by-package stuff.

Sigh. Please invest some time in how things are done first.
I asume that you are talking about the DVD iso, otherwise just
multiply by the abount of ISO's.
10.1 is out. It won't change. It is out. There has not any time-machine
invented togo back, so please drop talking about thinks that should have
been done. They did not happen, now move on.

So I will talk about the present and the future and what you want.
10.2 comes out, what is it exactly what you want and how do you intend
to give feedback to SUSE to achieve that?
Now is the moment to give Novell feedback. If they don't know, they
can't solve it.

And what about
people on dial-up, what are they supposed to do?

Don't install each version. Wait till your version is not suported
anymore. If the complete download of RPM's is an issue, then use a
previous version that does just that and wait for a version that does
that agan.
If af the moment your old version (10.0) is not suported anymore and
there is no solution to the whole download issue to your satisfaction,
change distributions.

OTOH if you see a 6 CD version for SUSE and you are a dial-up user, you
will know that it is not some small thing. SUSE is not a small
distribution and does not intend to do so, although to be fair, they are
reducing the amount of things you need to download. Only 3 CD's at the
moment.
