You need (absolutely) to install the updates during the initial Suse
installation.

These updates patch the faults with Yast and prevents these problems
from happening in the future.

I've given up on the little system tray software updater. I found a
repository and manually updated everything through Yast. For all the
things Suse does well, it seems very peculiar that a simple, auto update
reminder application is so buggy

The new thing also updates all version updates of all installed
(from catalogs) software, not just the security patches.

Once you do the initial installation right this new Zen works
really well.
