An average user who only wants to use a computer but does want to touchAbsolutely, but how many of these things can be done in a default

Use office applications
Read and write email
Surf the Net
Maintain their own web pages
Play music and video
Edit music
Watch and record TV
Store and manipulate photographs
Store and edit home videos
Install additional software for something outside this list.
Windoze install without having to install extra (usually expensive)
software?
Most of the above software is usually supplied included with the extra
hardware
and some of it IS included in windoze.
There is plenty of freeware (or is "obtained" free) that can normally
be installed far less problematically than in Linux. There are also
various progs that have no Linux equivalent.
Bottom line remains, If the command line was unnecessary far more
people would use linux.
It is unnecessary, I like the majority of this group CHOOSE to use it as
I do in Windows
I doubt there's a linux box in use that's never had to have a console
opened to fix the software.
And if the 'auto-run' feature on the CD-ROM used for installing this
software is turned off or not working for some reason, then how do they
install the software? Oh yeah, they have to "click on Start-Run and
type in x:\setup.exe when x is the letter of the CD-ROM you are using".
Sounds like a command line to me, only put in a pretty little window
so people don't get scared!!
The term is "user friendly".
And the number of Windoze users who have
no idea what the drive letter for their CD-ROM drive is.... Just how is
this any more difficult from linux?
Now, markzoom, are you honestly trying to tell us that you have NEVER
had to use the start-run box?
I have used it on occasions and typed the intelligible words
"Setup.exe" or "Install.exe" into it, or just used the "browse" GUI
next to it and clicked on the file. But even this is largely
unnecessary now.
Ah, right click Open with install software.
Ah yes, synthetic packet managers withe their uninstalled
suppositories. What a boon. Application only works with kernels
3654.4.3.6.b1. onwards, compile from source, degrease the tarball,
problematic in debian but works with mandrake if you blablabla, rpm,
dependancies are missing. All documented in the nonexistant manual
too. Reeeeeal user friendly....
