Update strangeness

My new install (10.1 32 bit on SOYO mb, Intel Celeron D 2.9GHz, 512M, 250G Sata 1.5, and everything on the DVD installed) won't update.
I configured update, but did not do updates when installing.
Now, using Yast, it tells me that there are no updates.
Using Zen, there are updates but every one of them has an error that prevents updating (usually can't resolve dependencies).
rpm -import ...
gives me an error (import not an option)
rug set-prefs ...
also gives me an error
/ is 7.9G of a 16G partition (43 % used) that contains everything except swap (2G) and /home (50G).
The system works and internet access is fine, just won't update.
There was a mention months back about Yast having problems.
My other system, a 64 bit AMD machine has been running 10.1 for months with no update problems.
Thanks for any suggestions.
John
