Query re Installation of 10.1

Following Vahis's installation guide I got stuck at the initial online
updates using Yast as instructed.

I had during the installation set up the network card with a fixed IP,
test was OK, went online OK via firefox, but Yast would not find any
update patches because it would not configure?

Switched the network card back to automatic and tried again with Yast
online updates - this time all is well.

Can somebody tell me why this should be so please, specifically why
fixed IP does not work and automatic does, I can't see why it makes
any difference as long as the box has a valid internet connection?

TIA

Jonah
