Radeon 9200SE problems with SUSE10.1

Suse installs this video card as vesa. Any attempt to use Sax2 either
by the command line or the Yast version results in a blank screen
without any input after the sax2 command. Screen refresh is then
incredibly slow with vesa so I tried to install the ATI drivers using
the installer from their web site. This does not generate any errors
but restarting X with a cntrl-alt-backspace gets back to a blank
screen. cntrl-alt-F1 gets me back to a terminal and reverting to the
Xorg.conf file from installation or uninstalling the fglrx drivers gets
me back to a working display.
I think the only way to fix this is by editing the xorg.conf file
created by the ATI installer but I have no Idea which bits. Can any one
guide me?
