Thanks for the help everyone. Wow, whatever happened to suse being
easy to install??
I'm trying to install version 10.1. I originally installed it on an
external drive via USB. Now I've switched over to firewire (the drive
has both). The drive still doesn't show up as a bootable drive. Will
it cause a problem to run CD 1 with USB and the rest with firewire?
Well I used the default setup in YaST to partition my drive, except
that I increased one of the drives (I'm so confused about which ones
which and what they do) from 4.7 GB to 8 GB so that I could install
more packages. I'm assuming that by adding to that partition, it would
have automatically made one of the other partitions smaller, right? Or
was I supposed to do it myself? So I started up on CD 1 and used
'pdisk -l' to get my drive info. But there are tons of partitions on
the drive (there were only 3 HFS partitions when I started, according
to Disk Utility on OS X) and I don't know which one I'm supposed to use
in that 'boot fw/...' command. So I wrote down the numbers for all the
ones that seemed likely and tried them all, and all of them gave the
error message "Unknown or corrupt filesystem".
Incase you haven't figured out yet, I really have no idea what I'm
doing with all this low level device stuff. I'm not a hardware person
(or firmware for that matter).
TIA

I'm trying to install Suse Linux on an external drive on a PPC Mac G5.
I have buned CD 1 and 2. I boot to CD 1 and go through the
installation process without trouble. When it is finished, it tells
me
that it is going to restart in 10 seconds. It doesn't give me any
options. So when it restarts, I attempt to boot to CD 2, but it isn't
bootable. Neither is the Suse partition of the external drive. I've
tried booting to CD 1 again, but it doesn't give many any extra
options. So how do I move on to the 2nd CD of the installation
process?
Which SUSE release?
SUSE 10.1? Did you read and follow the partitioning instructions on
http://en.opensuse.org/PPC_Partitioning ?
SUSE 10.0 does not support repartitioning and installing a bootloader
from within Yast, it all has to be done manually.
Start your Mac from cd1
In the yaboot menu type 'boot
ext-disk-node/partition/suseboot/vmlinux'. You will need to find the
OpenFirmWare node name f you externeal partition first.
This will start SuSE from the HD and will continue the install process.
On suse 10.0 for ppc you need all 5 cd's for the standard install.
Good luck,
Armand
Look at http://hansmi.ch/articles/boot-linux-from-firewire for an
example open firmware path.
I think firewire would neet something like:
'boot fw/inode/sbp-2/disk@0:x,/suseboot/vmlinux'
x is the partition number you can find by using 'pdisk -l' after
starting in rescue mode from cd1.
Maybe you need to add root in the same notation.
By default suse 10.0 installs vmlinux in /suseboot/vmlinux.
Google for 'open firmware external firewire disk path' and you will
find some suggestions.

I don't thonk that Mac's can boot from a USB drive, only Firewire.
Did you start the installation over with the external drive on Firewire ?
