Re: Intel-536ep modem on Suse 9.3

I can not resist replying to this topic. The blame machines are
wrong. The real blame is the Linux design vs the MS design afa
hardware drivers are concerned. MS provides an interface so that hw
drivers are not a compiled part of the kernel. Linux it seems has no
such high level h/w interface so the h/w drivers must be written into
the kernel.
The "Hardware Modem - preferred external serial" is an admission of
this Linux defect and not a solution. It is saying that Linux is
incapable of not breaking h/w driver interfaces on a regular basis due
to its design fault. If Linux should screw up the serial interface
(perhaps a bad update) then all serial modems will also fail.
I have 2 white box PC w/ this modem working 100% running MS W2K. I
will most likely use MS ICS and route the Linus OS to the internet via
the MS system. Suse 10.1 is a dual boot using 2 hdd/s.
The loud Linux bigots here are to be congradulated for driving few
more nails into any possible Linux consumer market. Coral and
Mandrake are gone ... keep it up smucks. Linspire is losing it I
think ( now a freespire to save their ship ). The Linux server market
will survive and they could care less about the non Enterprise
business.

The situation is that, at the current time, there does not seem
to be software that can configure the Intel-536ep modem for kernels >=
2.6.11.
I have tried to compile the source code with and without the
various "patches" I could find on the net without success. To be fair
the patches were developed for kernel 2.6.10. I often managed to
compile ("make 536") but the resulting executable refused to install
as a module.
My options are to wait till someone (linmodems?) comes up with
a code or a patch that works on kernels >= 2.6.11. I am indeed willing
to buy an alternative modem card that would work - which one would you
recommend?

Has anyone managed to get this modem to work on Suse 9.3?
I haven't used a modem in quite some time so I can only offer you
links. Go to this site:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=977
and download the 'SuSE* Linux' driver. Then follow the instructions in
this file:
ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/6508/ENG/readme.txt
Let us know if you have any problems with this procedure. :-)
