Help please: problem with slow KDE and programs

Hi!

For a few days now I have a very strange problem (SuSE 10.1 with latest
updates)

The computer boots normally, at runlevel 5 the login screen appears. When I
try to log into KDE the splash screen appears but does not come further
than the second startup sequence (those icons blinking). Finally the splash
screen disappears and if I wait long enough, KDE starts after approximately
10 to 15 minutes.

Applications start very slow there. Clicking on the Konqueror makes it pop
up 5 minutes later... Once it is running it works relatively smooth.

I thought it might be related to the kernel, the kdelibs or X, booted from
DVD and went into the installation menu, resetting those to the original.
When YaST boots the system, goes again into the installation menu, finishes
it and continues to runlevel 5, all works as speedy as usually. Hence I
thought that was it - faulty kdelibs or the kernel or X...

But that's not the case: after a reboot it went slow again. After some
trials I realised that the system is always normal working after this
installation process, even with the most current kdelibs and kernel. I
tried it with a very small irrelevant file and violá: after reaching
runlevel 5 after the installation process the system is back to normal,
booting it again... you know.

Does anybody have an idea what that could be??? Any help is appreciated and
thanks in advance!

Oliver
