OpenSUSE 10.1: Problem getting Yast/Hardware/Printers to load ppd files

My Yast print management service does not seem to load ppd files
consistently.
I'm relatively new to Linux (four months with 10.0 and now upgraded to
10.1) and trying to live Windows free after 20 years using Microsoft,
so have only a vague idea of what I'm doing. Forgive all this detail,
I'm not sure what's relevant.
I use two network printers (HP Photosmart 8250 and Brother HL-1440) on
Netgear PS121 mini servers. Under my 10.0 setup, both worked fine as
LPD devices, once I figured out the URL, Server Name, and PPD file for
each. I have not changed any of my hardware since my upgrade to 10.1.
Under 10.1, Yast keeps dropping the PPD files, both of which are
listed. They look like they are zipped. Is Yast supposed to unzip
them? After several failed attempts (perhaps 10), I managed to get the
Brother printer working by downloading the PPD file directly and using
it--even this took several attempts. I've had no such luck using a
downloaded PPD file with the HP 8250, with Yast or with the KDE print
manager as root. After each attempt, the printer manager says
"unknown" under the model listing. When I try to print to the HP 8250,
I get a license and copyright line from SUSE and then several blank
pages.
I note that others in this user group have had some luck with the HPLIP
software (linuxprinting.org), but the HPLIP notes for the HP 8250 say
that it will not work as a network printer. My wife uses these
printers from her Windows desktop, so taking it off the LAN is not an
option.
I would appreciate any thoughts from more experienced users.
