booting without loading the X Window system.

SuSE comrades,
I'm running SUSE Linux 10.1 on my computer, and it's running well. I had to change my monitor. When I now boot with it, the system tries to run the X Window system, and it seems the settings for the old monitor are out of the permissible range for the new one, because the monitor flashes the message "SIGNAL OUT OF RANGE." This occurs before the logon screen appears. From the manual for my new monitor I know what is allowed so I need modify the system.
How can I boot SUSE and prevent the X Window system from loading so I can edit file /etc/X11/XF86Config with values that will work with the new monitor? Are there any other files I need to edit? Any other parameters that need to be changed?
Thanks in advance,
Norm
