I don't know, but all I got for 5 hours after trying just about everything
conceivable was "Network Unreachable" when I tried to ping XP. Finally
I changed one of the static addresses to 192.160.x.x and it suddenly
started working perfectly.
The I used KNet attach and it finally saw the shared folders.
Netmask was 255.255.255.0 on both of them.
If the range was 192.168.x.x, shouldn't the netmask have been 255.255.0.0?
I've never used a cross-over cable. I always use a hub or switch, but I'm
not aware of any issues with using any particular IP range with a
cross-over.
However I don't even understand how you got a 192.160.x.x/255.255.255.0
address to connect to a 192.168.x.x/255.255.255.0 as they don't appear to
be in the same range. (?)
To get two machines to connect I would have tried 192.168.2.10 and
192.168.2.11 both with a mask of 255.255.255.0.
What addresses did you try initially?
JohnK
The addresses that finally worked were 192.160.30.2 on the Suse 10.1
box
and 192.160.30.3 on the xp box (both had netmasks of 255.255.255.0).
So I must have had incompatible static addresses on one (or both) of
the boxes
until I finally changed it to the 192.160.x.x??? It must be, cuz
right after I changed them everything started working. However, with
a crossover cable, when you do "browse workgroup computers" you might
think it would find other addresses, would it not?
Also, I kept trying to use the following from bash:
mount -t cifs //XP_Server_Name/SharedFolder /mnt
and even after I had fixed the incorrect static addresses, this still
failed.
I also (eventually) figured out that I had to shut off BOTH firewalls
on
BOTH computers. I can see configure tools on Linux that would let me
easily
add exceptions so that the firewall would let certain addresses through
but
not on the XP box.
It was KNet Attach Folder that finally did it for me ( a thousand
thanks to whomever wrote that!!).
