Ndiswrapper need or not with 10.1 suse

Very confused now I have been trying to connect suse 10.1 using a Belkin wireless network card , initially I installed ndiswrapper from the original install DVD I managed to get drive present hardware present also managed to briefly get it on line . however after many hours well days fiddling about with various configurations and some of the default wireless cards included with Suse 10.1 I did a complete format and reinstall of Suse 10.1 . My question is this , does Suse need Ndiswrapper to install wireless cards , I ask this because I cant get any of the default ones to be recognised using ifconfig wlan0 scan etc
Before the reinstall I had installed Ndiswrapper and managed to get a couple of the default wireless cards to be recognised I even got the access point recognised just no I address . I can no problem at all connect using the internal Nic card wired to router . the machine I am trying to set this up on is a IBM thinkpad r40e .I keep searching this newsgroup and Google to try and find out for myself , I have also spent time re installing Suse I have written down exactly what I did to get it to work as well but will not do it a second time . Feel like I have hit a brick wall here and cant learn any more until I have sorted this part out . pleas any advice will be gratefully appreciated again .
