Re: Yast vs firefox web access via modem

Hello Michael,
I can for example navigate just fine to
ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/linux/suse/Suse/i386/9.3/ with my firefox
browser, and ftp through the directory structure from the command line,
but if in yast2 I try to "Change Source of Installation" -> Add -> tick
"FTP" for Protocol, enter exactly ftp.iinet.net.au for Server name and
exactly linux/suse/Suse/i386/9.3 for directory, and leave "anonymous"
ticked, I get an error
Unable to create installation source
from URL 'ftp://ftp.iinet.au/linux/suse/Suse/i386/9.3'.
Details:
ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)
Try again?
YES NO
I run pretty much the exact same set up from lab at work, and it works
fine. I presume it's something to do with access protocols, but I can't
work out what.
In another example, I can navigate fine via firefox to
http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/suse/i386/9.3/, but
Protocol HTTP
Server mirror.pacific.net.au
Directory linux/suse/i386/9.3
gives me the same sort of error as above.
In the past it has been careless syntax, but this time it seems to be
something else! Any other ideas? I've confirmed that proxies are
disabled (and not necessary). What does Yast do differently to anything
else?
Regards,
john

Hello all, I wonder whether the solution to my problem is obvious toWhen you say you can access the web through firefox is this by name or
anybody --
I only have a winmodem in my machine, so under linux I have to access
the internet via my Apple airport modem. I instruct the Airport to
dial-up from my Mac, and once connected my SuSE 9.3 Linux box is
connected to the airport via ethernet through a splitter.
I have in the past been able to download email to my linux box from a
server through this routing (although I've intentionally disabled it),
and I am able to ping from the command line and access the web through
firefox. I am unable, however, to successfully specify a mirror as a
software source under Yast trying both http and ftp protocols with
appropriate mirrors. I know the syntax can be very fussy, and I've
permuted every possibility I can think of (e.g. regarding forward
slashes or not in the installation directory, and looking up the IP
address for the mirror and using it instead of depending on DNS). I'm
stuck, but desperately need to update some packages on my machine
before I can install third party software, as some things were
apparently missed the first time around (e.g. "gtk-config").
by ip?

Can you supply a couple of examples of the url's and directories 'exactly'
as you are entering them. For instance, one might be to have an http type
source and a url of software.opensuse.org and a directory
download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1
Notice that there are no slashes either before or after the url and the
directory !! They are added when you click ok. After you click ok with
the above given information the complete url becomes
http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1
So you do not want to put forward slashes in front of or after the url and
directory in the input boxes....
Hope that helps..
