Re: Suse 9.0 Pro Updates?

David,

When I first installed 9.0 Pro, I chose it because it provided a wide range
of applications (for the Desktop and for Servers) It now appears that
Novell is supplying newer Suse versions which require annual fees if you
want to run Server applications.

That would be the Enterprise Desktop and Enterprise Server products.
However, they are still supplying the same sort of product that you are
using with 9.0, only much more updated.

I don't want to get into an expensive
re-occurring cost....

That's where FTP installs or downloading the ISO images comes in. You
only have the cost of the media you write it to, and you can get that
down to a single CDRW by downloading the mini ISO.

That's one of the reasons I originally chose Linux
over Windows... The idea that a working Linux software becomes obsolete is
not too comforting either.

All software becomes obsolete and/or updated. SUSE has always[0]
supported their distributions for about two years from the release date.
During that time you get security updates as required. Software version
updates may happen for a few packages, but usually only happen when a
new version of SUSE is released.

Can I install the 10.0 or 10.1 Suse version overtop of my 9.0?

You could, but a jump from 9.0 to 10.0 is a big version jump. It would
be better to backup all the important stuff and then do a fresh install.
If you have a separate /home, then the stuff there should be quite safe.

How much
does it cost, etc... ?

Depends on your download speed. The faster the download speed, the less
time it will take. Money-wise, it doesn't cost anything.

[0] Well, maybe not always, but it has been this way since at least v7.3
and probably even earlier. I can't recall the exact details for certain.

David Bolt
