This interests me - the answers I usually get are:
1: something less prone to infection / safer
2: something that doesnt phone home/ have DRM / restrict what I can do
(I suppose these relate to 'a more stable windows'?)

The people I speak are not interested in safety. They don't even know
what is unsafe about their surfing behaviour. Point 2 is even less of
their concern.

The vast majority of people whose pc's become infected have no clue how
it really happened. They ARE interested in safety, they just don't
know where to start. I hate to say this but they need to be protected
from themselves. And we need to be protected from them.

While they may not be directly interested in DRM or the phone home
(Genuine Advantage) issues of today, they are aware of privacy and
identity theft issues and want to be protected. I daresay they NEED to
be protected, for their own good and everyone in their email address
book.

The people who are seriously interested in Linux will be running Linux.
The rest is looking for a Windows alternative and Linux ain't that.

Not sure I agree - for the bulk of people who want to run a mail client,
a browser and an Office clone, why not? Serious question - Granny
doesnt want to play games, so why not give her a Linux box?

Granny's computer came loaded with an operating system. She probably
has no clue that there are alternatives. She probably wouldn't know
how to go about switching to a different OS either. She just wants
email to work so she can get pics of the grandkids and be able to surf
to the AARP and Overstocks.com sites.

I am not saying that they won't be able, or should not be able to do so,
but I am not talking about a pre-installed system. Linux does not come
pre-installed, so it is not really an option.

If you want to get it installed, you need to know at least some basic
things or ask me to do it. Then I will ask what the purpose is and how
often and what game they play.

I'll hold my hand up here: I'm sick of people ('friends') calling me up to
ask why their windows system is running slow / wont start / wont install
something whatever. I've lost count of the number of other peoples PCs
I've cleaned up over the years.

I too have friends and neighbors like this. I even have a U3 thumb
drive that's loaded with antivirus, spyware, etc., that I carry just
for this purpose. It gets old. These people have never heard anyone
but me talk about Linux. Most are under the mistaken idea that the OS
that came with the PC is the one that's supposed to be running.

<snip>

Otherwise I just basicaly say that people should moan to the company
where they bought their stuff. It is THEIR stuff that does not work, not
mine. Mine works fine.

It would be really nice if that company actually did something about
the software that doesn't work, wouldn't it?
