Let me start by saying that I am a complete novice with Linux!

I am running SUSE 10.1 with KDE 3.5 desktop. I have a problem with
my Google toolbar on Firefox (the search box text does not display
properly). The Google forum says that there is a problem with the
SUSE version of Firefox and advises that the Mozilla version should
be used.

I notice that Mozilla are up to version 1.5.0.7 whereas SUSE is still
on 1.5.0.6, so that in itself seems a good reason to change.

My first question is 'Is there a good reason NOT to install the
Mozilla version?'

Secondly I have downloaded the Mozilla version and extracted it to a
local directory to see if it works with the Google toolbar. When I
execute 'firefox' in this local directory the version that is loaded
is still the SUSE one, why is this? Is there some way to run both
versions to see if the Mozilla one cures my Google problem? How
would I ensure that this version became my default when starting
Firefox?

TIA for any assistance with this.

David
Hi
Download the 1.5.0.7 rpm from the 'projects' directory and use the
rpm -Uhv command, then run SuSEconfig command.

Find a mirror site here;

http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html

I use ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/projects/

Even better, add the mozilla project as a source.

Copy&paste the following to terminal as root:

rug sa --type=zypp \
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/projects/mozilla/10.1 mozilla

then, still as root:
rug sub mozilla

You will be notified by Orange globe when there are newer
versions of installed Mozilla software like Thunderbird, Firefox
and Seamonkey :)

I have some more notes here:
