Thanks, Kevin...
Those are all things I checked before I wrote to this newsgroup. To wit:
As I said before, running "gnome-terminal --geometry=110x40" works fine (and. yes,the window is much larger on my 20" screen), I just want it to open that way. (And, yes, I'm aware this is an option passed to and defined in X-Windows.)
As I wrote before, I grep'd every instance of "gnome-terminal" and changed it to the text above. I was hoping someone in the 'group might have some practical experience with "freedesktop" standards and could point me to the place where Gnome has placed the configuration information so I can change it.

I've grep'd every instance of "gnome-terminal" in text files and

changes.
'--geometry' command line parameter is actually an X Window System
parameter and works with most programs. It works with and without the
equal sign. Is your screen large enough for 110 columns by 40 lines?
Have you tried 80x25 to see if there is a change?
You can also do the following in a terminal:
gnome-terminal --help
with most programs to get a list of command line options.
Is there any way to reconfigure gnome-terminal for the geometry ISince I rarely run GNOME, I can't say for sure. For individual users,
want, either for the individual user, or globally?
the standard Linux practice is to have a hidden directory in your home
dir for local settings. In your home dir do:
ls -a
and look at the directories beginning with a dot, like '.gnome' and
such. Browsing through there might show you some text configuration
files you can edit . . .
Open standards. Open source. Open minds.
The command line is the front line.
